So as I said, I was already thinking about doing parties. And then I was trying to figure a way to help stop the genocide in Sudan. Whenever there is a challenge ahead, I try to think of every way to beat it. Nothing is out of bounds.
So my brain was in party mode and then it was also in Sudan mode:
Party...Sudan...Party...Sudan....
Wait. What about Sudan Party??? So I called my friend who is really involved in the Sudan effort and asked him what he thought about it and if the best thing for me to do would be to donate money to TransAfrica, which is an organization that is really in the trenches with this battle. He told me that TransAfrica is great, but they are well funded by the likes of Danny Glover, big gov't agencies, etc. and that he could think of some less funded organizations that also have less overhead. He told me he would call me back the next day.
Well he never got back to me, so I started searching my brain. I then remembered this Liberian lady named Saymendy who lived down the street from my parents' old house. She had an organization called "The Women's Wing," which helped out battered women, dealt with foreign relations between the US and Africa, and a lot of other things. I also remembered that a few years back there was an article in the paper talking about this guy who went around trying to convince African goods makers to come over to the US to sell their stuff. He told them that all they would have to do is pay for their flight over here and he would set up a place for them to sell their stuff, and also take care of their hotel accommodations. All they needed to do was pay him upfront. Needless to say, it was a scam. They came over here and the guy was nowhere to be found. No hotel reservations, no vending booths, and no refunds.
The hotel was nice enough to let the Africans sleep outside of the lobby, but Saymendy decided that was not good enough for these people. She went down there and told them, "Get your things together; you're moving in with me."
Now, I know Saymendy is not rich like that. She has five kids and no man/father in the house. She let 14 strangers move on in. Dang...would you have done that? As much as I would like to say yes, I gotta say, I don't think so.
So anyway, I called her and told her what I wanted to do. She told me that she already sends money over there and that she could help me with what I wanted to do. There...I was getting close to having all the pieces to the puzzle...or so I thought?
